New to the Website: A Civil War Period Harquebus Helmet with more military helmets to follow.
We are excited to present this Harquebus Helmet, dating to around 1640, now available on our website. Highly associated with the English Civil Wars, helmets of this quality are increasingly rare, making this an exceptional find for collectors of early military armour.
This particular piece is likely of German or Flemish manufacture and displays the defining features of the type:
A one-piece fluted skull fitted with a carrying ring
Articulated neck lames, characteristic of continental production
A fixed peak with sliding nasal-bar, both retaining their original stamped marks
Helmets of this pattern were imported into Britain in significant numbers during the mid-17th century and saw service on both Parliamentarian and Royalist sides throughout the conflict. For those who appreciate early armour, this is a strong and representative example.
A comparable helmet is held in the Royal Armouries and illustrated in David Blackmore’s Arms & Armour of the English Civil Wars (page 15). You can learn more about similar pieces by visiting the Royal Armouries website, which offers excellent reference material for anyone interested in 17th-century military equipment.
